Monk's Cloth:
Monk's Cloth is a 100% cotton, loosely woven, basket weave fabric available in many colors. It is used as the base fabric for Swedish weaving, which is a type of embroidery. Monk's Cloth derives its name from the woolen fabric used to make the clothing for monks centuries ago.
Some claim that the hems of monk's habits were adorned with designs using yarn in a technique similar to Swedish weaving. Today we decorate cotton monk's cloth with yarn to make beautiful and unique items for family, friends and for the home.
Preparation of Monk's Cloth:
When purchasing the monk's cloth make sure that it is cut exactly along the cross-grain of the fabric. Monk's cloth must be stitched at both ends prior to preshrinking and weaving. Either machine stitch or use of a hem stitch like "The Italian Hem Stitch" to keep the fabric from unraveling. The stitching should be about 2 to 2.5 inches from the cut edge. After stitching, unravel the monk's cloth up to the stitching to make the fringe. To preshrink the monk's cloth, completely soak the fabric in a washer with hot or warm water. Do Not wash or agitate it.
Spin out the excess water. Place in a hot dryer. Following this method will prevent fuzz and pills from forming on the monk's cloth.
